This file contains important information on the NetBSD 1.4.2 release
that did not make it into the main documentation.

[all platforms]

	1. Additional source patches available

	The directory .../NetBSD-1.4.2/patches/ contains patches against 
	the 1.4.2 sources for various bugs discovered after the formal
	release. Some of these patches may be of critical importance!
	Please read the file .../NetBSD-1.4.2/patches/README to learn
	about what patches are available. 

	2. Union filesystem is buggy

	It has been noted that the union file system, is highly
	buggy.  If you include it in your kernel, ordinary users
	can likely panic your machine.  If you run a multi-user
	installation, it is recommended that you take this file
	system out of your kernel.  The distributed precompiled
	kernels have had this file system removed.

	3. IPfilter is actually at version 3.3.6
	Contrary to what the install notes say, the IPfilter software
	is actually at version 3.3.6, not 3.3.5.

[all miniroot-shell-installing platforms, e.g., port-amiga, port-sparc]

	When configuring the network during the installation, you will be
	asked for media options for your network interface. The default
	value offered can be the name of the interface, which does not work
	if chosen either explicitly or by hitting the return key.

	You can work around this by typing 

	none

	literally if you don't need any media options, or, of course,
	by entering the mediaopt parameter you need.

[all platforms that use MBR partitioning with the sysinst installation program]

	There is a bug in the MBR (Master Boot Record) partitioning part
	of "sysinst", the install software for several platforms. It will
	miscalculate partition sizes if you select "cylinders" as your
	partitioning unit.

	Workaround: only user either "sectors" or "Megabytes" as units
	for MBR partitioning.

[port-alpha]
	The LAST_MINUTE file in the alpha/ directory contains a few
	fixes for the release building machinery on that port.

[port-arm32]
	The LAST_MINUTE file in the arm32/ directory contains a few
	fixes for the release building machinery on that port, as well
	as an addition of the VIA Rhine driver to the CATS config.

[port-i386]
	The LAST_MINUTE file in the i386/ directory contains a few
	fixes for the build process and the common LFS fix from the
	source/patches/lfs-vs-netboot.diff file.

	The number of split sets for the i386 (in i386/binary/sets/Split)
	was out of sync with the installer. As a workaround, some
	components were concatenated, and some nul-sized split sets
	were added to make the number of components match what the
	installer wants. This means that the last file of some split
	sets will be larger than the usual 240640 bytes, and the
	last few files of other sets will have size 0. Note that
	this only affects installation via floppies.

[port-mac68k]
	The experimental sysinstall kernels in mac68k/install/instkernel
	are known to be buggy. Especially, if you try to use the menu
	to edit the partition table on a disk with HFS partitions, and
	then do a clean install, it's likely to newfs (and destroy) the
	wrong partition! Note that the "supported" installation procedure,
	as described in the INSTALL.* documents, doesn't use these kernels.

[port-macppc]
	The LAST_MINUTE file in the macppc/ directory contains a few
	fixes for the release building machinery on that port, and the
	common LFS fix from the source/patches/lfs-vs-netboot.diff file.

[port-next68k]
	The LAST_MINUTE file in the next68k/ directory contains a few
	fixes for the release building machinery on that port.

[port-pmax]
	For machines which can only install via a network boot and have
	buggy PROMs that don't allow booting normal size kernels, there
	is an experimental network loader that contains a compressed
	kernel available in installation/misc/smallnet.ecoff.gz.  Use
	this kernel instead of nfsnetbsd.ecoff.gz.  Please report any
	successes or failures to the port-pmax@netbsd.org mailling list.

[port-sparc]
	The LAST_MINUTE file in the sparc/ directory contains a few
	fixes for the release building machinery on that port, as well
	as fixes for the zs serial driver and the part of the common
	source/patches/lfs-vs-netboot.diff file which are strictly needed
	on this port.

[port-sun3]
	The LAST_MINUTE file in the sun3/ directory contains a few
	fixes for the release building machinery on that port.

[port-vax]
	The LAST_MINUTE file in the vax/ directory contains a few
	fixes for the release building machinery on that port, as well
	as the common LFS fix from source/patches/lfs-vs-netboot.diff.
